Matteo Curioni

Matteo Curioni

Matteo, like most Italians boys, was born with soccer in his blood. His passion for soccer was only enhanced by playing for great coaches and with great players. He started playing club soccer when he was 11 years old, and when he was 15 he started as an assistant coach. When he was 16 he was coaching his own team, while still playing as Captain of the U21 selection team of Milan. At age 19 he played pro-level in Italy before returning to school to earn his degree in Exercise and Sports Sciences. As a coach, Matteo has worked with players from age 6 to adult. After coaching for the same club in Milan, Italy for almost 20 years, he moved to the U.S. where he’s coached club, high school, and college teams. He began coaching for DJCT in January 2016, later becoming the Director of the Junior Academy in June 2017.

Matteo’s coaching philosophy stems from both his 20+ years of experience as a coach, as well as the exposure he’s received visiting and learning from professional clubs across Europe, such as AC Milan, FC Inter, AFC.Ajax, FC Barcelona, Watford FC, and AC Sparta Prague. First, he believes in developing a “complete” player. He believes that many of the skills, if developed properly, will carry over and help the player throughout his life. Second, when coaching a team he focuses on strengthening the players’ collaboration to ensure they play as a team, not individually. Finally, he stresses the importance of a strong work ethic to obtain results. He believes that smart players with strong motivation are able to compete against better players and beat them, and that’s the magic of soccer.

Matteo says:

“I’m really excited and thankful for this opportunity. I’m looking forward to applying my passion for the sport, my experience, and the exposure I’ve had to European Pro-Clubs to help develop our players following the DJCT philosophy.”
